On Fatherhood

Fatherhood is often an under-appreciated role. Fathers are responsible for so very much and carry enormous weight, holding many things together for the family.

A father provides more than financial support (which in itself takes enormous effort and dedication) and discipline — his presence, consistency, and engagement in the world help his children develop a sense of security.

When he is engaged with his children and emotionally available — his children learn that they are worth being known and understood AND they develop self-worth and emotional availability too.

When he shows up, is reliable and caring, he teaches his children how they should be treated in relationship.

A father who listens, encourages and sets/enforces matter-of-fact boundaries provides a sense of safety and protection. His voice becomes an internal orientation and point of reference that is both kind and strong.
